HISTORY: Targhee were the second breed of sheep developed by USDA. The goal of the breeding program was to develop sheep that were suited for the Western United States range lands. Earlier attempts to produce such a sheep resulted in the Columbia, but it was felt that a sheep with finer wool than the Columbia could be produced. So the station started with a foundation stock of Rambouillet, Lincoln, and Corriedalecrossbred ewes that were bred back to RambouilletRams. The Targhee sheep was born and is 23/23.5 microns.
